A Legal Lion’s Livery: Mindy Lin & Adrian Ntwatwa

Jean Cocteau said it best: “Style is a simple way of saying complicated things.” Whatever fashion may or may not be and whether or not you care about staying on trend, it is and forever will be a way to express something for some people. From powdered perukes to skinny jeans there is no telling what it all means. For now, I am fine with not knowing exactly what style means. In my eyes, the best part about clothes will always be the people who wear them. Perhaps that’s the point of it all — projecting a bit of yourself out to the world with your style in the hope that someone will listen to your story. That is, after all, what it’s really about. Isn’t it?

Each issue we’ll pick two Columbia Law students and interview them to find out what story they’re trying to tell with their sartorial choices.  If you’d like to suggest a fashion-forward classmate, email features@morningsidemuckraker.com

Mindy Lin

It was once said that a woman’s dress should be like a barbed-wire fence: serving its purpose without obstructing the view. Even though I have only interacted with her just a few times, I have noticed that Mindy’s style is certainly like a barbed-wire fence in this regard because it compliments her so well! She is a beautiful woman who is not afraid to take risks, and even when she dresses conservatively it is done in such a trendy way. All current and former law students know that the first year of law school is arguably the most stressful time in law school, which can lead many law students to choose wearing the comfortable sweats and shoes over the more trendier articles of clothing in their closets. It is nice to know that there is at least one other person at Columbia Law School who appreciates dressing up to class, regardless of how stressed their first year of law school has made them. –Eliazar Chacha, CLS ’16

Name: Mindy Lin

Age: 24

Hometown: Rockville, Maryland

Undergrad: Princeton University

Favorite Quote: My momma always said, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” (Forrest Gump)

Number one fashion inspiration: My roommate and best friend from college has really fun, colorful personal style. I always gravitate towards neutrals, but when I throw in a pop of color, I’m taking a page from her book!

You are a closet Jesse McCartney fan. (Though I don’t try that hard to keep it in the closet.)

List 3 of the Goals On Your Life’s To-Do List:

  1. Incorporate enough dairy into my diet
  2. Be the interior designer of my own house
  3. Acquire a good tennis serve

How Would You Describe Your Style: Comfy-easy-casual, but I also try not to look like I rolled out of bed and walked out the door.

Where Would You Mostly Likely Be If You Didn’t Choose To Go To Law School: Probably holed up in a lab doing physics experiments.

How does the freedom to express yourself play a role in your life: I like to express myself through my clothes, drawing and painting. It makes me feel like I’m exercising my brain in a way I don’t necessarily do every day in school or at a desk job.

Adrian Ntwatwa

Often times, mostly around finals, law students sacrifice their appearance for the sake of a few more minutes in the library. Not Adrian Ntwatwa. This fashionisto consistently exhibits his outgoing personality and his professionalism through his unique yet subtle blend of colors and lines. Adrian’s sense of style reveals his sophistication and individuality without being flashy, a rarity for a man of his tender years. –Elie Tawil, CLS ’15

Favorite Quote: “This coin has been traveling 22 years to get here, and now it’s here. And it’s either head or tails. You have to call it, friend-o.” – Anton Chigurh

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: Hmm, that’s tough. I would say blueberry for now, but rum raisin is not too far behind.

Favorite Book: “A Storm of Swords” by George R.R. Martin.

You are a closet True Blood/Girls fan.

List 3 of the Goals On Your Life’s To-Do List:

  1. Watch an Arsenal FC game live in London.
  2. Make a substantive contribution to the socio-economic development of Uganda.
  3. Finish watching all of “Battlestar Galactica.”

Not necessarily in that order.

Favorite place to hangout in NYC: Anywhere with whiskey and where most of the people in the room don’t know what the word “estoppel” means.

Where Would You Mostly Likely Be If You Didn’t Choose To Go To Law School: Maybe back in Uganda trying to be a professional badminton player (yes, seriously). Or probably in debt, trying to figure out what to do with my life while also trying to stress out as little as possible. Oh, wait.
